Leather Coats

Mysterious and sexy, classy and cool, leather is an absolute essential season after season.  Like fur, leather is an animal byproduct, and while there is still some resistance to leather from the eco-conscious because of this, it is not generally quite as vehement, due to the fact that the animals from which leather is most often taken, such as the cow, are used for much more than just their hides.  However, like with many other animal products, synthetics have been developed, making leather more widely accessible, although real leather is not always quite as expensive as real fur can be. 

Like fur, leather also has a long history in fashion, and has been associated with several different archetypes and personas.  For example, leather is often associated with cowboys, as in long leather dusters and chaps, while perhaps on the opposite end of the spectrum, leather is also associated with bikers, with their black leather jackets.  It is interesting to note that the use of leather by these groups was due to practical reasons, as in its durability and warmth, and from there grew into fashion trends.  Black leather trench coats are also featured in many comic books and on many action heroes as a signature piece of clothing, while other sub-cultures, such as heavy metal rockers and the S & M crowd have adopted leather clothing into their own images.

While the above images may seem cartoonish or stereotypical, leather can take so many forms that it is often anything but, and the most popular styles of coats often have a leather version.  Leather can be dyed into many colours, so whether you go for understated neutral or bright and eye-catching pop, leather will suit your style.  For women, a sleek leather blazer, or a pea-style leather coat, can serve as chic outerwear that will take her from day to evening easily, as could a ¾ length belted leather trench.  For men, a leather athletic-style jacket is a cool choice for the weekend, while a leather trench or bomber jacket is perfect to wear while traversing to the office.  The fur-lined suede jacket is a comfortable yet stylish choice for work or play depending on the cut, while other leather coats often feature fur-lined collars and cuffs for women.  For the young school set, a fur-trimmed leather parka, or again the bomber jacket, will keep them warm in style, and both are also unisexual styles, and look great on boys and girls.
